Geografo, viaggiatore, poeta arabo-spagnolo. Partì da Granada e superò lo stretto di Gibilterra, poi da Ceuta viaggiò per terre lontane, imbarcandosi su una nave genovese. Giunse fino ad Alessandria, nel 1183, dove fu ospite presso il califfo Salahuddin Ayyubi. Rimase impresionato dalla magnificenza della città egiziana. In seguito visitò Gerusalemme, Medina, La Mecca, Damasco, Mosul, Acri e Baghdad. Fece ritorno a occidente nel 1185, sostando in Sicilia. Di tutti i siti visitati e dei suoi viaggi (non privi di pericoli) diede preciso resoconto nei suoi libri, che furono tradotti anche in inglese.
